My second suggestion is about getting around the best individuals you can.

저의 두번째 제안은, 할 수 있는 한 최고의 사람들과 어울리는 것입니다.

We’re the sum total of five people in which we surround ourselves with the most.

우리는 우리주변을 가장 많이 둘러싸고 있는 5명의 합이라고 할 수 있습니다.

We earn the same income, we go to the same places, we do the same things, we think the same thoughts.

우리는 같은 소득을 벌고, 같은 장소에 가고, 같은 행동을 하고 같은 생각을 하죠.

And if you were to look at your five closest friends, you’ve got to ask yourself this one question,

그러한 당신 주변의 가장 친한 친구 다섯 명을 볼 때, 한가지 질문을 스스로 해보세요

“who are my leaders, and where are they taking me?”

누가 우리의 리더이고, 어디로 그들이 날 데리고 가는거지?

In other words, “Are my leaders taking me to the place I’d most likely want to be?”

다시 말하면 “ 내 리더가 지금 나를 내가 가장 가고 싶어하는 곳으로 데리고 가는 건가?”

If the answer is no, then you need new leaders. You need people who are inspiring, people that can help you, lift you up to the goals that transcend your own possibility and your thinking.

만약 그에 따른 대답이 ‘아니오’라면 당신은 새로운 리더가 필요합니다. 당신은 당신에게 영감을 주고 도와주고 당신을 당신의 가능성과 생각을 초월하는 목표에 도달 할 수 있도록 이끌어 주는 사람이 필요합니다.

You have to realize your goals, and you can only do that by getting around the right people.

Many of us have what I like to call “default friends”

당신은 당신의 ‘목표’가 무엇인지 깨달아야 합니다, 오직 ‘올바른’사람과 어울리는 것만이 그것을 할 수 있게 해주지요.

우리 중 다수는 ‘별의미 없는 친구’를 가지고 있습니다

And default friends are basically people that we see around the neighborhood, people at the grocery store, the gym, the mall, at church, at work, everywhere we go.

‘별의미 없는 친구’라 함은 근본적으로 우리가 집 주변, 식료품 가게, 상점, 체육관, 쇼핑몰 교회 등 우리가 자주 가는 곳에서 보는 사람들입니다.   

These are people that we naturally be friend as we start to gain their trust and acceptance.

이들은 우리가 그들의 신뢰와 수용을 얻기 시작할 때 자연스레 어울리게 되는 되는 사람들입니다.

And what tends to happen is, if you are a highly ambitious person, and you have really high goals, a lot of these people can help you reach your goals.

만약 당신이 매우 야심찬 사람이고, 정말로 높은 목표를 가지고 있다면 많은 사람들이 당신이 그 목표에 도달할 수 있도록 도와 줄 수 있습니다.

So you have to look outside, you have to search for people.

그러므로 밖으로 눈을 돌리고, 사람들을 찾아야 합니다.

I’ll give you an example, I had a friend his name was John and he was actually a plumber,

제가 예를 하나 들어볼게요. 저는 ‘John’이라는 친구가 있었는데 그는 배관공이었습니다

And his father and he had a pretty successfully business, at least it seemed like it,

John은 아버지와 함께 꽤 성공적인 사업을 하고 있었습니다, 적어도 그렇게 보였거든요.

So I asked John “I want to start a business, what exactly do you think I should do?”

그래서 저는 John에게 “나도 사업을 시작하고 싶은데, 무엇을 하는 게 좋을까?”라고 물어봤어요.

John pulled me to the corner and said, “Daniel, I don’t think you want to start a business, 98% of businesses fail within the first three years.”

John은 저를 코너로 몰아세우더니, “Daniel, 사업은 아니라고 생각해. 98%의 사업이 첫 3년안에 실패해” 라고 얘기해줬습니다.

Then he proceeded to tell me about all the reasons why I couldn’t do it, and why it won’t work.

그리고 나서 내가 사업을 할 수 없는 모든 이유와 왜 그것이 효과가 없을지 나에게 계속 말하기 시작했지요.

He told me how was so hard working over 100 hours a week, how hard it was to manage payroll, and why the recession was holding him back from getting more clients.

그는 저에게 일주일에 100시간 이상 일하는 것과 급여를 관리하는 것이 얼마나 힘든 것이고, 불경기 때문에 더 많은 고객을 얻지 못하는 이유까지 설명해 주었습니다.

As he told me this, I became a little discouraged, a little dejected, and I went home, and I thought about it.

John이 저에게 이러한 것들을 말해 주었을 때, 저는 조금 낙담하고 의욕이 꺾였습니다. 그 길로 집으로 돌아가서 그 말에 대해 곱씹어보았습니다.

When I get to my journal, I usually reflect, and I wrote down in my journal, “The 98% of statistics are made up.” Including that one.

일기장을 들고는, 제 자신에 대해 반성하고, “통계의 98%는 만들어진 것이다” 라고 적었습니다. 제가들은 그 사업관련 통계까지 포함해서요.

You have to realize that no one’s opinion of you can become your reality.

당신은, 당신에 대한 어느 누구의 의견도 당신의 현실이 될 수 없다는 것을 깨달아야 합니다.

And in order to change your reality, you’ve to change your mentality and the people you surround yourself with.

그리고 당신의 현실을 바꾸기 위해서는, 자신의 사고 방식과 자신을 둘러싸고 있는 사람들을 바꿔야 합니다.

You have to get yourself around people who can help you, people that are smarter than you, people who have gone further than you, and people who know what you need to do to get to that next level.

여러분을 도울 수 있는 사람들, 여러분 보다 더 똑똑한 사람들, 그리고 여러분이 다음 단계로 나아가기 위해서는 무엇을 해야 하는지 잘 알고 있는 사람들을 얻어야 합니다.

The truth is that the people that you are looking for are also looking for you, but you have to find them.  

사실, 당신이 찾고 있는 그 사람들도 당신을 찾고 있습니다. 하지만 당신이 그들을 찾아야 하지요.

Sometimes, we surround ourselves with strangers and family members who tell us what we can’t do, they limit us.

때때로 우리는 우리에게 우리자신이 할 수 없는 것을 말해주는 낯선 사람들과 가족들로 둘러싸여있지요. 그들은 우리를 제한합니다.

A lot of people have the right intentions, but often times, they provide the wrong directions.

많은 사람들이 올바른 의도를 가지고 말해주지만 종종 잘못된 방법을 제시하지요.

In other words, they want to help us but they just don’t know how.

다른 말로, 그들은 우리를 도와주고 싶어하지만 어떻게 하는 지를 모릅니다.

So get yourself around people who can.

그러니까 그걸 할 수 있는 사람들을 찾으세요.

A lot of people ask me, “Daniel, how do you find these people?”

많은 사람들이 저에게 물어봅니다 “Daniel, 그런 사람들을 어떻게 찾는다는 말이죠?”

It’s easy. If you follow step one, which is to read more books, you’ll find that in the back of the book there is the “About the Author” section.

그건 쉬워요. 만약 당신이 제가 제시한 “책을 많이 읽어라”는 첫번째 충고를 따른다면 말이죠

책 맨 뒤편에 보면 “작가에 대하여”라는 부분이 있습니다.

What I used to do is I used to reach out to the authors.

저는 그것들을 사용하여 작가들에게 접근하곤 했습니다

Thankfully, we live in a new millennium which allows us to get on their social media, their websites, and so we can have a conversation with them.

감사하게도, 우리는 SNS와 웹사이트를 통해 그들과 쉽게 대화 할 수 있게 해주는 새천년 시대에 살고 있습니다

We can change by actually understanding what it is that they teach.

우리는 그들이 우리에게 가르치는 것이 무엇인지 제대로 이해함으로써 변화할 수 있습니다

And if we ask enough questions, we can make great progress in our life.

그리고 만약 우리가 충분한 질문을 한다면, 우리는 우리의 삶에서 큰 진전을 이룰 수 있을 것입니다.

Remember that people you’re looking for are also looking for you,

기억하세요, 당신이 찾는 사람들도 당신을 찾고 있다는 것을요!

So get yourself around those people.

그러니 그러한 사람들 주변에 머무르세요
